Small Talk Is More Than Making Observations About the Weather
When most people hear “small talk,” they immediately think of… the weather.
And to be fair, it is a safe and familiar place to start. It's neutral, it’s easy, and if you live in the UK like me, it’s expected!
But here's the thing: small talk can (and should) be so much more than just weather updates. And if you’re working on improving your English communication skills, it’s one of the best tools you have to build fluency, confidence, and connection in real life.
Small talk isn’t about filling silence. It’s about building rapport, showing interest, and starting conversations that matter—whether it’s with a colleague before a meeting, someone new in the office kitchen
It’s fine to start with talking about the weather.
“Lovely morning, isn’t it?”
“Can you believe this rain?”
“Feels like spring is finally here.”
But what if you took it a step further?
However, you can improve this. Try:
“I hope the rain clears up—I’m planning on going for a walk after work. What are you up to later?”
Or:
“This sun makes me want to go on holiday. Have you got any plans for summer?”
You’ve now moved from weather to interests, routines, feelings, and personal stories—which gives your English more depth and offers more chances to connect. It's made the conversation more meaningful, and shows you have an interest in the other person too.

How can you extend your weather chat this week?
Please keep going, you're doing better than you think.
